John McKNIGHT Co. Down Great grandfather was John McKnight. John didn’t die until 1932 having emigrated to Scotland, and on all the Scottish censuses his birthplace is given as Ireland and on some also as Co Down. He married ( Presbyterian marriage) in Glasgow in 1878. His age then is given as 25 so assume dob c. 1853. His father is given as Matthew Mcknight, farm labourer, deceased, his mother as Mary Ann nee McPherson.

On his death cert it does also give his name as John ‘known as William’ ( a bit odd as I don’t see evidence of that elsewhere). He and his wife Jane nee Russell had two daughters, Lizzie and Mary Ann, my grandmother, but they were both born in Scotland. The Mcknight, McPherson and Russell names were all handed down to my father’s generation.

Matthew Mcknight is elusive apart from one I found mention of in Culcavy, where he had rented a plot of land.

I did find a Mary Ann McKnight, widowed, the right age living in Newtownards but giving her place of birth as Co Down. Her death was reported by a James McKnight. Given that Irish families of the time tended to have more than one child, I wondered if this James could be a sibling of John McKnight.

Alexander STEWART Bright married Eliza Catherine Fitzsimmons (realize many variations) I believe in Belfast Feb, 27, 1838. I have found a newspaper article about his homicide which states he visited his bro-in-law in Downpatrick, Dr. Fitzsimon the night of his attack. It also states he was a highly respectable family and married to the daughter of a farmer of comfortable circumstances named Fitzsimon. His attack occurred on December 26, 1842 and he died Jan. 6 1843. I think he might have been born in Belfast in 1789. His father was William Stewart, mother Mary McConnell, both born in Scotland, I believe. Alexander and Catherine had a son named Alexander born in July of 1843 who immigrated to America sometime before he was 20 I believe.
